Make a Skirt

skirt

In this two-part workshop, you’ll learn to use a printed pattern to sew a flattering A-line skirt. This is a great class for confident sewers who want begin making their own clothes. You’ll correctly take your measurements, learn to use a pattern, plus insert a concealed zipper and line a garment. This pattern fits UK sizes 8-22.

PLEASE NOTE: This is not a beginner’s workshop, but a good introduction to dress-making for someone with recent basic sewing experience. You should already know how to sew a straight seam and confidently use a machine with some projects under your belt before coming to class. (If you haven’t sewn recently, please start your sewing journey with one of our Intro to Sewing Machine workshops: Cafe Apron, Cushion Cover or Tote Bags)

  • Level: Intermediate
  • Course length: Two 3-hour sessions

Materials needed

Please bring the following supplies to class in order to complete your project:

Fabric, lining, zip and thread.

For dress size 8-22:

Fabric: 2 m of 113 cm wide light to mid-weight fabric (e.g., cotton, denim, moleskin, lightweight wool, needle cord)

Lining: 1.75 m of 113 cm wide polyester or poly/cotton fabric. 100% polyester is trickier to sew with; using poly/cotton means your tights will stick to it. :)

Amy Fleuriot took her first dress making class at age 13 and from that day on made it her mission to learn to make everything she possibly could. “I always look at things and think, I could do that,’ she says. ‘I get such satisfaction from trying out new crafts and techniques.’ After taking City & Guilds classes in Millinery, Embroidery and Upholstery, Amy went on to study a degree in Fashion Accessories at The London College of Fashion, where she was inspired to start her own business, Cyclodelic. She now works from Cyclodelic’s studio and shop on Columbia Road designing and making stylish sportswear and accessories. Amy’s cycling accessories have been spotlighted in The Wall Street Journal, The Guardian and Easy Living Magazine and she has collaborated with design icons such as Zandra Rhodes and Eley Kishimoto to produce accessories for their collections.
