Ruka Johnson is a lingerie and accessories designer based in London. She originally trained at the London College of Fashion in special effects makeup and wig making before retraining in lingerie creation. In 2003, Ruka, a former member of a burlesque duo, began creating nipple tassels for other showgirls and performers. They proved such a hit that she branched into mini tophats, eyemasks, garters, hair bows, ostrich feather fans and other accessories. Four years later, she set up business at the Chocolate Factory Studios in Wood Green and began producing simple and affordable handmade knickers and bras.
Her business, Sugarlesque, supplies wholesale and bespoke lingerie and accessories internationally to boutiques, vintage stores, online shops and even the world’s first sex supermarket in Paris. ‘I’m obsessed with fun, flirty knickers and want to flood the market with interesting handmade versions,’ says Ruka.
