Workshops

Knockout knickers

briefs, boy shorts, thongs, knickers

Tired of boring high street knickers? Sew your own instead! You’ll make a pair of briefs or thongs in class, then take home patterns and instructions to stitch briefs, thongs and boy shorts. You’ll learn to insert elastic, create the perfect bow, and have a go on overlocking machines to finish seams. All materials provided, including printed cottons, satins, and lace plus fancy trimmings.

PLEASE NOTE: This is NOT a beginner’s workshop. You should already know how to sew straight and curved seams, confidently use a sewing machine and have a few recent projects under your belt. (If you haven’t sewn recently, please sign up for one of our Intro to Sewing Machine workshops: Cafe Apron, Cushion Cover or Tote Bags)

Additional information

Ruka Johnson is an independent lingerie and accessories designer based in London. She originally trained at the London College of Fashion in special effects makeup and wig making before retraining in lingerie creation.

In 2003, Ruka, a former member of a burlesque duo, began creating nipple tassels for other showgirls and performers. They proved such a hit that she branched into mini tophats, eyemasks, garters, hair bows, ostrich feather fans and other accessories. Four years later, she set up business at the Chocolate Factory Studios in Wood Green and began producing simple and affordable handmade knickers and bras.

Her business, Sugarlesque, supplies wholesale and bespoke lingerie and accessories internationally to boutiques, vintage stores, online shops and even the world’s first sex supermarket in Paris. ‘I’m obsessed with fun, flirty knickers and want to flood the market with interesting handmade versions,’ says Ruka. She is currently working on a new underwear collection to launch in Spring 2009.
