Freehand machine embroidery & applique
If you’ve never used your sewing machine to draw, embellish and embroider, then you’re in for a treat! In this workshop, we’ll teach you the ins and outs of freehand (or ‘free motion’) embroidery – PLUS teach you two types of applique! (It’s like two classes in one!)
Using gorgeous specialist threads and sturdy cotton twill, you’ll create three or four textured, layered pieces of your own design, then back each with your choice of a wide variety of lovely printed or solid colour fabrics. Use them as coasters, group them as mini artworks on your wall, or affix them as pockets on bags or clothing! All materials included.
PLEASE NOTE: This is not a beginner’s workshop. You should already know how to confidently use a machine before coming to class. (If you haven’t sewn recently, please start with one of our Intro to Sewing Machine workshops: Cafe Apron, Cushion Cover or Tote Bags)
- Level: Intermediate
- Teacher: Helen Rawlinson
- Course length: One 3-hour session
- Next date(s):
- Saturday 30 October, 10:30am—1:30pm
- Fee: £45.00
- Availability: 6 places left

A-line skirt
Sew a flattering A-line skirt in this two-part workshop. Learn to use a commercial pattern, insert a concealed zipper and line a garment! Great for sewers who want to take the next step and begin making their own clothes. You’ll learn to take your measurements then use (and take home) a lovely Amy Butler Skirt pattern which includes three variations – so you’ll have a slew of new skirts in no time! This pattern fits UK sizes 8-22.
Bring your own materials or purchase from a selection of over 150 different gorgeous fabrics and other supplies in our retail shop. Click here for the supplies list.
PLEASE NOTE: This is not a beginner’s workshop, but a good introduction to dress-making for someone with recent basic sewing experience. You should already know how to sew a straight seam and confidently use a machine with a few projects under your belt before coming to class. (If you haven’t sewn recently, please start with one of our Intro to Sewing Machine workshops: Cafe Apron, Cushion Cover or Tote Bags)

Hand-carved stamps, cards & tags
Ever stuck for the perfect greeting card? Now you can carve your own stamps, then put them to use to create handmade cards and gift tags or jazz up plain wrapping paper! You’ll create one or two stamps of your own design, take away a stack of cards and gift tags, and leave with the skills to make more at home.
All materials provided, including rubber carving compound, wood to mount your stamps for easy use, plenty of paper for cards and gift tags, an instruction sheet to take away plus use of all specialist tools, glues and pigment inks during the workshop. (We’ll also have supplies available in our shop after class.)
No experience necessary; we’ll help you shape your designs, reverse and prepare images, cut and clean the rubber, plus teach you to use ink in innovative ways.
